ASSERT Classroom Granite School District
The Autism Support Services: Education, Research, and Training program (ASSERT) is a university-based preschool for children with autism based on the principles of ABA. ASSERT was founded by Dr. Thomas S. Higbee in 2003 to help children with autism and their families by providing intensive behavioral interventions. Research suggests that early intervention is critical for producing positive outcomes for children with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs). Thus, early identification is important so that behavioral interventions can begin as soon as possible. Researchers have also shown that while many children with autism do not learn easily in typical educational settings, they can learn a great deal when the instructional environment is appropriately constructed. When treatments for children with autism are designed by qualified personnel and are based on the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), then the interventions consistently produce positive outcomes for children with ASDs.
Your child has been identified to attend the ASSERT classroom in the Granite school district. In this classroom, your child will receive small group instruction and will have a curriculum designed specifically to address his/her skill level. We also focus on decreasing challenging or inappropriate behavior that students may exhibit by creating and implementing specific behavior plans. Highly structured teaching procedures will be used, such as Discrete Trial Training, to increase the number of learning opportunities presented to the students each day. Naturalistic procedures, such as Natural Environment Teaching (NET), Natural Language Paradigm (NLP), Incidental Teaching, and group instruction also will be used. ASSERT not only teaches children in the educational environment, but also works with parents and other caregivers to create and implement interventions in the home, in community locations, and for transitions into kindergarten. We also will provide parent and teacher training to further facilitate student success.
We are looking forward to working with you and your child this year!
